The Challenge: The google, bing and other maps are excellent tools for search and find results online. However, in small states these tools does not perform as expected, largely due to the location services not be available on our devices, the lack of data being feed to google, and i guess the lack of having the ability to access some kind of backend data from google's system.
However, No one can beat a map. Maps have been used for centuries. "In fact the one who has the map is the one who has the power" ...ppgis, http://www.ppgis.net/
“Good PGIS practice should ensure that spatial knowledge located on a map is not separated from the wisdom (moral, ethical and cultural values) which is attached to it." Nigel Crawhall, 2007
Nigel (2007) is showing that we all have some experience in a particular area/ spatial location, and that is valuable as the location on a map.
Google maps are great for display ( How can I leverage google map) but still have the benefit of a full database for control of the data specifically for issues, knowledge, wisdom of a location.
We are developing a localized solution of Google maps for Grenada.
It will be an open project. Please email mychitterman@gmail.com to find out more about this.

Just by viewing the map above with the pinned markets you get an idea that there is something happening.
If I stick a Key for each marker, then you go - "oh that what this is"
However, if I stick information on the marker then you are alive and kicking.
We all know this kind of maps - provided by google. However we have little control over the 'backend" - the place where the data is stored.
Over the past 6 year I have worked with many maps. Creating one map in Google Earth, Exporting to Google Maps via KML and going back and forth. Great tools, however, all my maps are in Google, I have no control. I have no access to do a little bit of search on my maps.
In fact when I use google maps to do a search for Grenada, I get results for certain search criteria, eg. Hotels.
