According to the article "More than 100 billion bananas are consumed each year, making it the fourth most important crop after wheat, rice and corn"

Grenada and Bananas ( Locally referred to as "fig").

While Bananas grows throughout the country. There has been a shift away from cultivation of export.
I remember the day when all we had in our lands were cocoa intermixed with bananas and nutmeg. We would go to the gardens to take care of the bananas, apply NPK ( fertilize), de-flower and sleeve the bananas, then cut them with the (curve grading knife) and wash and pack them into a nice "Box" then take them down to the boxing plant.
Over the years this died out.
What I recall was the days when we went into the "boxing plant" in Birchgrove and there to be told that we had "Rejected" bananas.
Maybe 1 fig has a tiny spot or link and the whole box was rejected.

The days of slaving to provide to other are soon to be over. It is time we start planting "fig" for our own sake.
